Hermantown Hawks Fall to St. Thomas Academy in Class A Boys Hockey State Championship [PHOTOS]

It certainly didn’t feel like a day to be playing hockey in St. Paul. The temperature outside the Xcel Energy Center was an unseasonably warm 63 degrees as Championship Saturday kicked off in the State of Hockey. The Hermantown Hawks had soared through their season, going undefeated through all of the regular season and earning the #1 seed in the Boys Class A bracket.

The team’s path to Championship Saturday started on Wednesday night against Rochester Lourdes, with the Hawks asserting themselves with a 7-2 victory to open the tournament. Round two brought Thief River Falls, which came down to a third period goal by tournament standout Jared Thomas.

The only thing standing between the Hawks and being State Champions would be #2 Cadets of St. Thomas Academy, who advanced through the tournament by shutting out both Little Falls and Breck. Coming into the tournament, the Cadets already owned three State Championship Titles.

The Cadets got off to an early start, going up on Hermantown 2-0 early in the opening period of play, and there wouldn’t be much looking back from there. By just over the halfway point of the second period, St. Thomas Academy would amass a total of 5 goals and hold the Hawks scoreless. Jared Kolquist broke the shutout and score Hermantown’s only goal of the game at the 11:34 mark in the second period, converting on a power play. Both offenses were held in check for the remainder of the game, with the end result being a 5-1 victory for St. Thomas Academy and their fourth State Championship Title.
