Bulldogs Forward JT Brown Signed by Tampa Bay Lightning

The UMD Bulldogs have produced a number of NHL players over the years, and another was added to the list as of today. Sophomore forward and 2011-12 All-Western Collegiate Hockey Association first teamer JT Brown signed a two-year deal with the Tampa Bay Lightning today (March 28).

Among his many accomplishments with the team, Brown was named 2011 Frozen Four Most Outstanding Player and became the first Bulldog to record two hat tricks in the same season this year, which came in games against Nebraska-Omaha and Alaska-Anchorage.

Brown is the son of former NFL running back Ted Brown, who played for the Minnesota Vikings. JT reports he decided to wear his number 23 as a tribute to his dad, who wore the same number in a Vikings uniform.

The 21 year old Burnsville, MN native had the following to say about the opportunity:

I am excited about this opportunity to come to Tampa Bay and play for the Lightning. I see the organization as a great fit for me and although I had a tough decision to make, I definitely feel it was the right one. I can’t wait to get started.

Lightning Vice President and General Manager Steve Yzerman offered the following comments about the signing of Brown:

We are pleased to announce JT’s signing with the Lightning this evening. He has all the top characteristics we look for in a player, including high skill and compete levels. We’re glad he chose to play for the Lightning and we look forward to getting him in the lineup as quickly as possible.

According to a press release from the Lightning, Brown will join the team later this week. They hope to incorporate him in play yet this season.
