Will the NBA Draft Be Expanded to Three Rounds?

The NBA may be in lockout mode, but that doesn’t mean league activities have stopped. Owners have proposed adding a third round to the annual draft, which could lead to even more sweeping changes to the annual event, according to SheridanHoops.com. The goal is to create a more competitive balance of power across the league.

One proposal would keep the entire first round to the league’s bottom half of teams, pushing the better franchises into the second round. Another proposal would give the league’s worst eight teams additional first round picks.

Colts’ QB Peyton Manning Will Sit Out Game for First Time Since 1997

Peyton Manning’s amazing streak of 227 consecutive starts will come to an end this Sunday amid news that Manning has been officially ruled out for the Colts’ opener against the Houston Texans.

“To say I am disappointed in not being able to play is an understatement,” Manning said. “The best part about football is being out there on the field playing with my teammates. It will be tough not to be out there playing for the organization and our fans.”

Forty-Four People Die When Plane Carrying Russian Ice Hockey Team Crashes

Forty-four people were killed when a Russian jet carrying the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl hockey team for the Kontinental Hockey League’s first game of the season crashed on takeoff on Wednesday.

It’s just the latest accident this summer involving Russian airliners — two other accidents killed a total 54 people which has led to calls for stricter safety guidelines.

Thanks to his stellar career in both China and the US, Yao Ming is a surefire Hall of Famer. But the former center isn’t ready to be inducted just yet.

Ordinarily, NBA players must wait five years after their retirement to be eligible for induction. However, since Yao was nominated by a member of the Chinese media as a “contributor” to the game, he could go in as early as next year. The eight-time All-Star reportedly felt it was too soon to be elected, though, and asked that it be pushed off for a later year.

Michael Vick Signs $100 Million Contract with Eagles

Michael Vick, who spent two years in jail and overcame bankruptcy, has signed a six-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles worth a reported $100 million.

Ever since the Eagles took a chance on Vick in 2009, he’s impressed by earning the starting quarterback spot and leading the team to the NFC East title last season. He set career highs in yards passing, touchdowns passes, and rushing touchdowns.

California Stuns Japan in Little League World Series on Dramatic Walkoff Single [VIDEO]

With two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning, 12-year-old Nick Pratto delivered a clutch hit that gave Huntington Beach, Calif., a 2-1 victory over Hamamatsu City, Japan, in the final game of the Little League World Series. The squad became the seventh team from California to win the title.

Braydon Salzman pitched a gem of a game for  California, striking out the side in the top of the fifth inning before navigating out of a jam in the top of the sixth.

Former NBA Player Javaris Crittenton Wanted for Murder

Journeyman guard Javaris Crittenton, 23, faces a murder charge in the death of a 23-year-old mother who is not believed to be the target of the shooting.

According to reports, Crittenton thought he spotted the man who robbed him earlier this year, and opened fire. The former guard is rumored to be in the Los Angeles area, and remains at large.

When veteran running back Thomas Jones of the Kansas City Chiefs reportedly took exception to rookie receiver Jonathan Baldwin’s protests over hazing rituals, the two got into a fight in the weight room that left Baldwin with a broken thumb.

Reports of the incident reignited debate over whether hazing belongs, and whether teams are doing enough to supervise their players’ conduct off the field.

Tennessee women’s basketball coach Pat Summitt announced on Tuesday that she has been diagnosed with early onset dementia, but that the condition won’t hold her back from the coaching.

The 59-year-old legend, who has more wins than any other coach in NCAA history, eight national championships, and an Olympic gold medal, was diagnosed in May.
